Biography

Marcela Gonzaga is from the state of Minas Gerais in the Southeast of Brazil. Gonzaga is an English teacher in Brazil with experience in elementary and high school, as well as university teaching environments. She concluded her master's in Applied Linguistics at Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto (UFOP/BR) where she researched how critical racial literacy dialoguing with literacy English classes of public schools in Brazil can affect the black identity of black high school students and refute the myth of racial democracy in the country. Gonzaga is a currently a Fulbright Scholar in the World Languages and Cultures department at Spelman College as a Portuguese teacher assistant. Gonzaga has chosen Spelman to experience the Fulbright opportunity because Spelman represents an opportunity to be closer to her teaching and research goals, as well as an opportunity to fulfill existential needs as a Black woman.
